Forced People to Vote "Yes" At the Polling Booth in Lashio and Namkham Township

On May 10, 2008 there were no free and fair referendum; the people were forced to vote (yes) from vote no in Northern part of Shan State Lashio quarter (10), polling booth No. (5) and quarter (6) polling booth No. (2). People were watching by the local authorities while voting their poll. “They are watching us while we are voting, so how can we give vote (no), we just have to vote (yes) because we are afraid of them they surround and followed to look at us.” expressed by a voter who came to polling booth at Lashio.

They invited and called the exact name of the people for the voting. However some people couldn’t vote even they are already 18 years old because their names are not in the list, while some of them could vote even they are not yet 18 years old, but their names are in the list. “The local authorities who are in the polling booth can vote for those people who didn’t come to vote at polling booth. One person can vote for 3 or 4 people for their friends of family. For example, the whole family does not have to come only one from the family can go and vote for the whole family” said by a voter.

In Namkham township did similarly with Lashio but it was eccentricity that the local authorities, police and fireman are looking around when people were voting. When the local authorities see people who give “Vote No” they call that person again to revote “Yes”. That’s why the public can not vote freely as they wish to vote and they are not satisfied with their results.
